IQ vs. Eq?

Academic Intelligence vs. Emotional Intelligence or another way to say knowing what to do vs. knowing how to do it? There are a number of ways this could be discussed. What is IQ? What is EQ? IQ is simply a measurement of our cognitive abilities while EQ Emotional Quotient is a measurement of our ability to recognize, understand, manage, and influence emotions in ourselves and others. IQ tends to be largely stable after adolescence and has a strong genetic component. EQ is more learnable and developable throughout life.

IQ and EQ are independent— someone can be high in one and low in the other, or high/low in both. Research (indicating Daniel Goleman’s work) often suggests that for leadership and career success, EQ often outweighs IQ beyond a baseline cognitive threshold. One you are “smart enough” for a role, how you manage yourself and others becomes the main differentiator.

The most effective people tend to have both— the analytical horsepower to solve hard problems and the emotional awareness to bring people along with them.

Just some food for thought as we lead ourselves and others.

Lead well!
